During the 1950s and 60s, when the large hydropower dam was built in Messaure, almost 3,000 people lived in the then newly built community, about 40 km upstream of the Stora Lule River from Vuollerim. When the Messaure dam was completed, many moved on to the next dam construction - several to Vuollerim and the construction of the Porsi dam.
